Did you know?

In France, the menstrual cup is considered to be an everyday object of consumption. However, in the United States or Canada, the menstrual cup is considered a medical device.

What is a Medical Device?

The term “medical device” means “any device, apparatus, equipment, material, product, except products of human origin, or other article used alone or in combination, including accessories and software necessary for the proper functioning of the device, intended by the manufacturer to be used in humans for medical purposes and whose main intended action is not achieved by pharmacological, immunological or metabolic means, but whose function may be assisted by such means. Software intended by the manufacturer to be used specifically for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes is also considered a medical device.

Medical devices that are designed to be implanted, wholly or partly, in the human body or placed in a natural orifice, and that are dependent on a source of electrical energy or any other source of energy other than which is generated directly by the human body or gravity for their proper functioning, are referred to as active implantable medical devices.”
French Public Health Code (article L.5211-1)

How do we manage the Vivaicup menstrual cup?

At Viva, we come from the field of implants. We consider our Viva menstrual cup to be a class II medical device.

We perform the following tests on Vivacup, just like a Class II Medical Device: biocompatibility (cytotoxicity, irritation, sensitisation); validation of disinfection in the microwave with the box or in boiling water.
